Cornwall Road is versatile to say the least. The street functions as a favoured film location alongside the 19th century Roupell Street, is the historic home of the first circus, acts as a commuter route for up to 30,000 people per day and importantly, is also a Greenway. Compared to its parallel streets, Cornwall Road has 70% fewer pollutants, making it an attractive and quieter prospect for pedestrians. After a successful Greener Cities Fund application in 2018, WeAreWaterloo introduced a series of improvements to further the street’s credentials as a clean air walking route.

Cornwall Road Mural

What was once an uninspired metal wall has been transformed into the centrepiece of the Cornwall Road Greenway. Lower Marsh based animators and designers YoYoPop created a visually stunning mural painted by the talented Peter Barber. The YoYoPop team even created their own webpage detailing the journey of the mural.

Secker Street Pocket Park & Chelsea Planters

Secker Street lies just off of Cornwall Road, and was the perfect location to build a wild-flower pocket park. With funding from the GLA, guidance from Groundwork London, on the ground support from Lambeth Estate Residents Association (LERA) and help from the local nursery and businesses, Secker Street was planted with over 250 wildflowers over one winter afternoon, bringing much needed colour and biodiversity to what was otherwise an uninteresting stretch of pavement.

St John’s Waterloo and LERA provide ongoing support to maintain this pocket park which is supplemented by WeAreWaterloo's regular weekly maintenance regime. In addition to this pocket park, seven large Chelsea Planters were also installed along Cornwall Road with complementary wildflowers. More recently, the pocket park has featured in the Mayor of London’s latest Grey to Green guide as a best practise case study.
